The bog cut paintings came before the India series. Sarah started painting stretches of bogland close to where she was living in the Beara peninsula in 1991. She was especially interested in the contrast between the gentle varying colours of the land and bog grasses and the sharp dark cuts into those colour plains. Where the turf is cut out of the bog using a slean, it leaves a beautiful pattern in the dark surface of the cut.
A trip to India for several months after moving to Beara led to the India series which was inspired by the arrid desert colours in comparison to the moisture of the Irish landscape and contrasting again to the desert were the wet paddy fields of Indian agriculture.
